Why Build Your Website With WordPress
WordPress is a user-friendly open-source platform to build your online presence through a blog or website. According to WordPress, 37% of the web is built on their platform due to its notoriety as a DIY website builder.
The content management system makes it easy to monetize your website in a variety of ways too. Several competitor sites have sprung up through the years such as Squarespace, Wix, and Shopify. Yet, WordPress remains the best contender. Here’s what you can expect from WordPress:
- Flexible and customizable platform.
- Has an open-source content management system (CMS).
- It’s free to download.
- Offers free custom themes and plug-ins.
- #1 website platform for Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
What Does Open Source Even Mean, Anyway?
Simply put, it means the original code for the program is available for users to make changes and redistribute as they see fit. So, when we say WordPress is flexible, it really is flexible.

3. Set up your domain name (included with your hosting package).
If you haven’t narrowed down the best domain name, no worries. You can still get your hosting and reserve your domain name later. But here are some tips to help you brainstorm the perfect name.
How to Choose the Perfect Domain Name
As I shared on my podcast, avoid choosing a complicated name. If it’s too long, too wordy, too hard to read or spell, “DON’T DO IT! RECONSIDER!” Lol. Also, be careful with mixing letters and numbers. If the domain name you want is not available, the host will make some suggestions. Just be careful to choose one that makes things simple.
Choose the domain name that’s closest to your business name or the brand you want your audience to identify with. For instance, my domain names are danielletowner.com and dreamworkcreatives.com. Both of those are a perfect match for my personal brand (my name) and my business brand (Dream Work Creatives. Our slogan is, our marketing makes the dream work.
Also, try your best to reserve a dot com domain name as the primary one. That is unless you’re a non-profit. In that case, .org is appropriate and common practice. After years of domain name reservations, it’s slim pickings for the dot coms. That’s why there are so many more extensions such as .biz, .us, .tv, and so on. Dotcom is still the leading extension, so get creative and get you a dot com in your life.
4. Complete your account information (name, address, phone email, etc.).
5. Add your payment details.
6. Finalize your package selection and any extras.
Domain Privacy gives you the option to mask your contact information. This prevents spammers and solicitors from contacting you by email, phone, or mail.
SiteLock Security adds an extra layer of protection for your website by scanning for malware or areas that are vulnerable to security breaches. The service also takes it a step further to correct any problems they find.
Codeguard Basic is a fancy term for website backup and restore service.
Bluehost SEO Tool Start helps DIYers drive high-quality traffic to their websites by providing feedback on how well they are using white hat search engine optimization best practices.
If you want to have a custom email address with your website as the extension, then you will need an Office 365 Mailbox.
7. Setup your account password.
8. Log in using the new password you just created.
9. Add a name and tagline for your website.
This will show up on your WordPress website. It will also become part of your overall brand identity, so make it good.
10. Choose the type of website you will have.
Think about if you will use it to promote your business, blog, or personal brand, sell products, offer services, etc.
11. Choose your theme.
